New River Mountain Guides
About Us
Since 1994 we've been mentoring climbers to help them expand their knowledge and become self-sufficient climbers at the New River Gorge and beyond. We offer private guiding and customized instruction for beginner to advanced climbers, who want to expand their knowledge, learn new skills, and gain experience to help reach their climbing goals.
All of our guides and instructors are not only climbers to their core, they are fun to climb with, and are skilled teachers who can help you meet your climbing goals. They're all trained and certified by the American Mountain Guide Association as Single Pitch Instructors (at minimum) and are dedicated professionals who take their job seriously.
We're headquartered in Water Stone Outdoors, your one-stop climbing shop at the New. The shop is open year-round, and the guide service operates seasonally from March to November (or whenever winter sets in). Have a trip booked? Meet your guide on the outdoor patio located at the rear of the store off the back parking lot.

Trip: Full Day Climb
Guide: Nina K.
We (two old heads, two kids) had a great day with our guide Nina. She guided us to and through climbs that spoke to everyone's skill set and also provided a refresh on anchor-settign so we coild head out on our own. She also teiple-checked that all anchors, knots, gear, etc. were safe.

Nina is an awesome guide. She found the perfect balance of keeping us safe while keeping it fun and relaxed. Choosing challenging routes without making it impossible. Encouraging us without pushing us too far. Teaching us without it feeling like a classroom. Beautiful area, fantastic guide and terrific routes made for a perfect day. Thanks Nina.

Trip: Half Day Climb
Guide: Craig R.
Craig with New River Mountain Guides was fantastic! We realized shortly after arriving at Bridge Buttress that my husband and I had climbed in that same location 25 years ago. After looking back at our old photos, Craig helped us recreate the photos with our son. We created new memories and solidified our son's love of climbing. Thank you!

We are gym climbers who have climbed outside a handful of times. Not being from the New River area, we had no clue where to go to climb within our ability, so we booked a full day of climbing with NRMG. And we had a fantastic time! The weather was ridiculously hot, but our guide, Nina, knew that we would be able to chase the shade all day at The Junkyard. By providing our climbing experience ahead of time, Nina was able plan routes that were within our ability, but still challenging to us. She also took the time to give us instruction on techniques and devices we were not familiar with. Would absolutely recommend booking a climbing trip with New River Mountain Guides as everyone we worked with were personable and accommodating.

Trip: Half Day Climb
Guide: Patrick O.
We had such a great time doing a full day of climbing on a Tuesday that we booked a half day of climbing on Thursday. Elaina was accommodating and got us setup with Patrick with only a day's notice. Patrick took us to the Bridge Buttress, and was awesome to spend the afternoon with: easy going, safety conscious, motivating, and very knowledgeable of the area and climbing technique. Would absolutely recommend booking a climbing trip with New River Mountain Guides as everyone we worked with were personable and accommodating.

Trip: Sport Lead Climbing
Guide: Jordan R.
Jordan was a great guide. He was thorough and made sure we knew all of the necessary skills and had the confidence to be able to head out on our own for sport climbing (which we did successfully the next day). He was super friendly and it felt like we were just hanging out with a friend for a day. I highly recommend Jordan as a guide and hope to take another course with him in the future!

Great day out with Nina! We had a great time in Bridge Buttress (Jaws & Chockstone were super fun) & Junkyard areas (Cave Route, photo was a great little chimney!). Nina was very knowledgable and happy to share tips & tactics. Also, Nina had a very 'go with the flow' mentality, she was great ensuring safety and a nice experience was had. Thanks Nina!!

Trip: Half Day Climb
Guide: Patrick O.
The rock climbing trip was extremely fun and our guide Patrick was excellent. It was my wife and I’s first time climbing outdoors and Patrick very patient with us, taught us a lot of techniques and encouraged us to try things outside of our comfort zones. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide and experience for our first time. Highly recommend for anyone looking to give rock climbing a try!
