New River Mountain Guides
About Us
Since 1994 we've been mentoring climbers to help them expand their knowledge and become self-sufficient climbers at the New River Gorge and beyond. We offer private guiding and customized instruction for beginner to advanced climbers, who want to expand their knowledge, learn new skills, and gain experience to help reach their climbing goals.
All of our guides and instructors are not only climbers to their core, they are fun to climb with, and are skilled teachers who can help you meet your climbing goals. They're all trained and certified by the American Mountain Guide Association as Single Pitch Instructors (at minimum) and are dedicated professionals who take their job seriously.
We're headquartered in Water Stone Outdoors, your one-stop climbing shop at the New. The shop is open year-round, and the guide service operates seasonally from March to November (or whenever winter sets in). Have a trip booked? Meet your guide on the outdoor patio located at the rear of the store off the back parking lot.

Trip: Teen Rock Camp
Guide: General I.
Another amazing experience for our returning camper! The guides were fantastic and managed to work around a rainy week to find climbing opportunities. We are so impressed with the care the NRMG teams takes and the quality of the camp. This experience has meant the world to our climber.

The guides were fantastic! Special shoutouts to Jeff who kept us laughing the whole time and to Nina who climbed up with a camper who was struggling with a fear of heights. Y’all rock! Much love from North Carolina ♥️

Trip: Scout Troop
Guide: General I.
Our instructors were extremely professional and super fun to work with. We had 8 Boy Scouts and two adult leaders. Three of our Scouts needed to earn their Climbing Merit Badge and these instructors were amazing. They had the Merit Badge book and even made sure the Scouts had the workbook portion they needed to complete the night before so they could come prepared. That is Great service. The location was stunning, and they had multiple stations set up so that you had a variety of climbing options that everyone could try. They also had a 60+ foot rappel setup for us at the end. Overall, I would totally recommend this group to anyone from beginner to advanced. They will hook you up. Literally. :)

Had a great time crack climbing off of Endless Wall. Challenging routes but Craig gave me the confidence and encouragement to get them done. Love NRMG vibe, the individual guides and of course the New River Gorge. Already planning my next trek back!!

Trip: Half Day Climb
Guide: Patrick O.
We had a fantastic time with Patrick! He picked a perfect route for us -- right at the edge of our experience level so that it was a good challenge for us having done a little rock climbing previously in Colorado. We were excited to get a chance to climb in a park known for its climbing, and the scenery around the routes he chose certainly did not disappoint! He was patient and encouraging and knew where to tell us to place our feet and hands if we got "stuck" because he clearly knew the routes backwards and forwards! We even got to rappel down the side of a huge rock face with the beautiful bridge in the background. Patrick made it a great experience overall, and we were definitely better climbers when we left than when we got there!

Trip: Teen Rock Camp

My 14 year old son did his first outdoor camping at teen rock camp last week and LOVED it. He learned so much from his guides, made new friends, and loved his week of climbing. Nina and Matthew took great care of the kids, teaching them climbing and camping skills. As a parent, I felt he was in very safe and capable hands. We had great communication from camp - enough to know he was alive and having fun, but plenty of independence for him too. I would absolutely recommend this camp and we will be back next year!

Legit climbing, and the best views we had of the gorge / bridge. Guide (Patrick) managed to perfectly balance pushing / teaching an 11 and 9 year old!
