New River Mountain Guides

About Us

5.0 (137 reviews)

Since 1994 we've been mentoring climbers to help them expand their knowledge and become self-sufficient climbers at the New River Gorge and beyond. We offer private guiding and customized instruction for beginner to advanced climbers, who want to expand their knowledge, learn new skills, and gain experience to help reach their climbing goals.

All of our guides and instructors are not only climbers to their core, they are fun to climb with, and are skilled teachers who can help you meet your climbing goals. They're all trained and certified by the American Mountain Guide Association as Single Pitch Instructors (at minimum) and are dedicated professionals who take their job seriously.

We're headquartered in Water Stone Outdoors, your one-stop climbing shop at the New. The shop is open year-round, and the guide service operates seasonally from March to November (or whenever winter sets in). Have a trip booked? Meet your guide on the outdoor patio located at the rear of the store off the back parking lot.

Trip: Half Day Climb

Guide: Jay H.

We had a great time with Jay! He helped us hone our basic skills and learn some new ones, while giving our kids time to build confidence on the rock.

I did a full day trip with Jay during Gauley season to work on some trad skills. I was a great time! I learned a lot and had fun. Will be back again for more lessons before leading trad at the new but it was a great start. Jay was great!

Trip: Half Day Climb

Guide: Nina K.

I had a wonderful time climbing with Nina through NRMG! I went with the half-day option and we covered a lot of ground in the Junkyard. Nina was excellent! She was super knowledgeable, safe, positive, and patient. Prior to this trip, I had only climbed indoors and she picked a variety of awesome routes that made it a memorable day. I can't wait to visit the area again and definitely would climb again with Nina!
