New River Mountain Guides
About Us
Since 1994 we've been mentoring climbers to help them expand their knowledge and become self-sufficient climbers at the New River Gorge and beyond. We offer private guiding and customized instruction for beginner to advanced climbers, who want to expand their knowledge, learn new skills, and gain experience to help reach their climbing goals.
All of our guides and instructors are not only climbers to their core, they are fun to climb with, and are skilled teachers who can help you meet your climbing goals. They're all trained and certified by the American Mountain Guide Association as Single Pitch Instructors (at minimum) and are dedicated professionals who take their job seriously.
We're headquartered in Water Stone Outdoors, your one-stop climbing shop at the New. The shop is open year-round, and the guide service operates seasonally from March to November (or whenever winter sets in). Have a trip booked? Meet your guide on the outdoor patio located at the rear of the store off the back parking lot.

Trip: Half Day Climb

Jay gave me an incredible day out on the Gorge. He was great with communication leading up to the trip and accommodated my schedule by going out earlier than usual. The day I climbed was in the middle of huge rainstorm, but Jay's knowledge of the area allowed him to bring me to an area where we stayed completely dry. I got the exact balance of learning, practicing new skills (cleaning sport anchors in preparation to be lowered), and awesome climbing that I was hoping for.

Our guide was awesome. My wife and I did a half day trip with our 7 year old son. We had some climbing experience although not on rock. Jay took his time to explain some techniques to us. He put us on some nice routes we were all able to complete along with a repel and was really encouraging to our son. Highly recommended! Thanks Jay!

Amazing trip!! Both of our guides were incredibly knowledgeable and willing to share as much as they could with us. They set us up with the perfect mix of climbs we could conquer while challenging us to make it to the next level. We would give them even more stars if it was possible.

We had a great time with Jay as our guide! He was easy going and met us where we were at as far as skill level and interest. It was clear that safety was a priority but with plenty of room for fun. We would definitely book again with Jay and New River Mtn Guides.

We had an amazing time! We had a very broad range of ages (5,8,40,66) and Kristi accommodated us all. Great way to see the NRG, test your limits, and have a lot of fun.
