Trip: Backcountry Hot Springs
Guide: Lucas E., Will C.
Visiting multiple hot springs was terrific while Luke and Will were fantastic. The food was excellent with multiple options that allowed people to eat what worked best for themselves.

This trip was an incredible experience, in many ways, for myself and my husband. There are several factors worth discussing, so I am going to break it down by positives and negatives, and whether or not Western Spirit had any control over it. The positives: Luke and Will were wonderful guides. They were patient, kind, and caring. When a person on the trip fell and broke his elbow, they swooped into action and made sure he got to a hospital while the trip was uninterrupted for the rest of us. Idaho is gorgeous. It is an embarrassment of beauty - every bend and corner is a new stunning vista. If you stopped to take a photo of every postcard-worthy scene, you wouldn’t go anywhere! The hot springs are so cool. Just, sitting in HOT water next to the freezing Boise river is such decadence after biking all day. The Atlanta campsite was absolutely miraculous. The whole group wanted to stay to enjoy it another day, but we couldn’t. The negative, outside WS control: many of the locals are not happy to see outsiders discovering the grandeur of their home. While passing us, many drivers sped up to spray us with dirt and gravel. It wasn’t all of them by any means, but it happened multiple times. The gravel road is very dusty. If you are prone to allergies or eye irritation, bring meds or protection. Also, horseflies. Use bug spray. The negative, within WS control: I think this trip is incorrectly rated as Intermediate and certainly not a ‘Mellow Road and Trail’ trip. The longest day (Weds) is 36 miles with most of that being incline. We climbed 4000+ feet that day. Additionally, the roads were washboarded, rocky, and gravelly every day. Riding uphill over washboard and rocks, getting dusted regularly by locals, followed by a sketchy gravelly downhill did not feel like one level above a Beginner trip. There were two people training for the Leadville 100 on the trip and they even were surprised by the intensity of that day. The other days were also bumpy, rocky, and dusty, but Weds near killed the whole group - the broken elbow happened this day. It was NOT mellow in the slightest. Also, the drink situation. Idaho is very dry and WS says they provide drinks. They do - but limited. Everyone was drinking up the seltzers and sodas provided without realizing there was a limit of 2-3 drinks per day. (Unlimited water, obviously.) By day 4 and 5, we were out of everything but water. I wish that had been made more clear because I would have made different preparations. Ultimately, I am glad I did the trip - I used an e-bike which made it infinitely more enjoyable. The views were stunning and I got to experience this truly unique geography! My suggestion to WS is to be more clear about what an ‘Intermediate Trip’ means or re-rate this trip. My suggestion to people considering this trip is to read the itinerary carefully and, if you have doubts about your ability, rent an e-bike.

The guides had great personalities and ran the trip very well. The axe was sharp, the bacon crispy, and the coffee was strong ;)

Just outstanding!!!! Frank and Avery were amazing. The food was excellent. My second trip with western spirit. If you are ever worried it might be too much, don’t think twice. There is fun and options for every ability on these rides. Cannot recommend more.

A great trip w good guides and fellow riders. Some of the hill single track was too steep and rocky for me so I may opt for a road intermediate or beginner/intermediate single track next time.
