Trip: Brown Girls Climb: Gym to Crag Day

Guide: Lizzy R., Andy L.

one of the best days out I have had in my climbing career, personal or work related. I felt like I was seeing the positive affects of creating a safe and inclusive environment unfold in real time on the wall, during discussions, in the down time. At one point I started tearing up because it was so moving to see how supportive and excited folks were to be there doing something challenging with each other. I was glad I had my sunglasses on!

Trip: CRUX Anchor Building Basics

Guide: Andy L., Athe T.

It was a wonderful and positively inspiring experience that would not have been possible without creating a space that is accessible for Deaf individuals like me. The group also were a perfect ratio between the instructor and participants. The site was clearly thought through prior to the class. Both instructors worked amazingly together. I would take their courses again in a heartbeat! With gratitude!

I had a wonderful time on this trip! Genevive and Cindy are great guides - they're super encouraging, know their stuff, explain things well, and foster a warm and welcoming community. It was great to be outside with other women of color and get to climb in Rumney for the first time. (Plus I really appreciated how affordable it was!)

Trip: Mentorship with May

Guide: Marian P.

May is SO knowledgeable! I scheduled 2 days in a row to work on gear placements, anchors and rappelling. I have to admit I have a lot of fear around the dangers of trad climbing, and am learning slowly, taking my time to feel comfortable and confident with my skill level. May answered the many questions I had about placing gear, helped me see the good, better, best way to place and understand the nuance of all the placements and gear choices. Day 2 we worked on anchors and they were extremely patient with helping me understand the knots, the order of backing yourself up always and the “whys” of everything down to details of knots. The more May explained everything the more trust I had in the systems, my own skill and the process. May’s passion for climbing and the outdoors is incredible and I highly recommend them if you want to really understand the many details of trad climbing. I will be continuing my mentorship with them for as long as I need to. Their discerning judgement for safety and patience with my pace were exactly what I was looking for. Thank you May and Rise!!
