Backcountry Ramblers Club

About Us

The Ramblers Club can and does consist of anybody who sets their time aside to get into nature or out into the moving, living, breathing world. Even my years spent living in San Francisco or Los Angeles, I would have surely been considered a rambler by my standard of the word. No matter your age, background, experience or endurance level - if you feel that moving, on foot, through this endlessly intricate landscape that nature or man has created is a way for you to connect with it and better understand it, then you may have the heart of a rambler. Now days, we prefer the natural world to the urban jungle. So here, we are truly blessed in the Cuyama Valley to be surrounded by the vast expanse (and 8 wilderness areas) of the Los Padres National Forest to our south, and 250,000 acres of BLM land, the Carrizo Plain, to our north. There is truly not enough time or facility in a singular human lifespan to experience all there is to see within this rugged, more often remote landscape- and that's part of what draws us in. There are many parts of the forest that are permanently altered in a season, or even overnight, and we are left with vestiges of what "was" through the oral history of the men and women who once rambled that altered country. Those who had experiences upon that land which forever altered them. We continue this storytelling tradition of pack trips and unsuccessful hunts. Strangers met on trail, spirits from the past communicating, gut instinct. Or just plain getting lost or caught in the grip of hard weather and making it through the night. Through this, we become part of the much greater, much more grand story of this landscape that we inhabit. We become part of a history not published in books or able to be captured on camera. If only this land could talk.

Unforgettable experience! Sam Seidenberg, your host for the trip, truly makes this a remarkable and unforgettable experience! It's been 2 weeks and me, my 7 year old daughter and German husband are still thinking and talking about the hike, the goats, the Yucca trees, the mocktails he made us - it's really an exceptional experience! Sam is chock full of knowledge about Cuyama and shares the spirit of the valley and forests with his energy, care for the goats, creative ideas, gratitude, lust for nature and life. It's a hike you will not forget. He's like an encyclopedia! Better than a recording. ;-) He tailors the hike to each group he works with so no worries if you're not a big hiker or have a hip replacement like me. You won't regret it! I think we're now thinking of getting goats just because of this experience with Sam and his goats.

Trip: Intermediate Deer Loop Hike

Guide: Sam S.

The trip was a trip! Sam and his 3 pack goats led us through the wonderful unique trails, as we learned alot about the history of the area and other fun facts along the way. His bartender skills on the trail are pretty epic as well. I highly recommend this unique, memory-making trip for couples and families!

We had a blast hiking the beautiful hills of New Cuyama with pack goats. Our guide, Sam, told us about the history of the area and taught us about the many uses of the local foliage. We look forward to visiting again for another hike and a great meal at the Cuyama Buckboard.
