Advanced Ranch to Branch Canyon Hike

Location

New Cuyama, California

Group Size

Max 8 people

Duration

6 hours

On this 7 1/5-mile hike, we head southwest on the ranch and find our way across a large meadow, into the canyon bottoms. Historically, an equine trail, this "path of least resistance" leads us through a rich variety of ecosystems, providing life to a vast array of species. Foraging along the way, we learn about (and if you're lucky, witness) the flora and fauna that call these canyons home. 2.5 miles in, we crest a large ridge and begin to see our destination from a painted panoramic perspective. We descend into our destination canyon to head south on a historic cattle route where a surreal world made of ancient rock begins to take shape. Sandstone cathedrals and hoodoos appear and flow for miles the further you peek. As the goats rest and drink fresh spring water, we set up camp and use our forage to craft beverages. It is typical to have a picnic and take in the scenic beauty. Few people have the privilege to walk here, but those who do can always feel the alluring, mystic force of this area. We pack up again and climb rocks, explore caves, and take binoculars onto the lookouts to explore as long as time allows. Climbing back up the big canyon wall will be the most physically challenging, as there are no switchbacks. Once we make it back on top of the ridge, the trail is a gentle trek back to the ranch where we tell stories inspired by our ramblings. This hike is suitable for ages 15 and above.
