Duration

2.5 hours

Our Deer Loop Hike spans a 2.5-mile trail, suitable for ages 12 and above, and explores a woven network of animal trails, ultimately resulting in a loop with the destination being a large sandstone rock formation.

Foraging wild herbs and botanicals from and along the trail, we discuss the history and geography of the land, both ancient and contemporary. Journey with Sam and the goats as he checks or places game cameras to observe wildlife or clears some minor brush work along the way. Through these side pursuits, we engage in trail stewardship and learn about how and why trails are made, both by people and by wild inhabitants.

Upon reaching our destination, we set up a day camp under the natural shade of a sizeable rock face and explore the cave shelters and lookouts that this rock formation offers. The guide uses our foraged bouquet of wild botanicals to create mocktails, or if the weather is cooler, tea. We rest and chat, and eat if you've opted for Trail Food (see menu for offerings) before trekking the last half-mile down to Twin Pines, otherwise known as goat camp.
