I thought I got a lot out of it. I’m personally kind shy asking questions in group settings (especially in avy education) and would probably be more inclined to ask questions if there were less people. The format of short sessions throughout the year is more beneficial than a long 3 day course because personal experience in the backcountry is the only way I can actually make sense of this information, and spreading out the courses helps me debrief before I can soak any more classroom material in.

Fantastic course. Mia is a very good teacher. She gives us lots of time in the field. She gives us information to perform the task at hand and allows us to execute it and do mistakes which greatly enhances the learning experience. She also deeply listens to everyone. She also has a ton of experience.

Ben and Jesse absolutely killed it. I feel like I got so much out of this course. Our teachers put ideas and situations in front of us that catered to a universal need of being safe in the Backcountry. Whether you were experienced going into the wilderness or not the principles stay the same and this course establishes those principles and builds on them.

Excellent experience taking the AIARE Rec 1! The 8 hours of classroom instruction from Ben & Jesse was engaging and never boring. The 2 days in the mountains was incredibly thorough and they took advantage of every learning opportunity the weather and snowpack offered. These guys understanding of avalanche conditions in the area and wisdom with how to navigate it equipped us better than we could have hoped! We are definitely returning to Ben for any future mountain classes or guided trips!

Ben and his partner for this AIARE 1 class, Jesse, were awesome. Both are extremely knowledgeable on navigating safely through mountain environments. We spent the classroom day learning about snow, avalanche problems, terrain assessment, and more. That was followed by two field days where we practiced rescue skills and got to see firsthand many of the topics we discussed in the classroom. I really appreciated the "advanced movement" course option which enabled us to have a more engaging and fun day of skiing. I highly recommend Ben Markhart Mountain Guiding for any course or guide trips you may be looking for.
