Our teachers put ideas and situations in front of us that catered to a universal need of being safe in the Backcountry. Whether you were experienced going into the wilderness or not the principles stay the same and this course establishes those principles and builds on them.

Excellent experience taking the AIARE Rec 1! The 8 hours of classroom instruction from Ben & Jesse was engaging and never boring. The 2 days in the mountains was incredibly thorough and they took advantage of every learning opportunity the weather and snowpack offered. These guys understanding of avalanche conditions in the area and wisdom with how to navigate it equipped us better than we could have hoped! We are definitely returning to Ben for any future mountain classes or guided trips!

Ben and his partner for this AIARE 1 class, Jesse, were awesome. Both are extremely knowledgeable on navigating safely through mountain environments. We spent the classroom day learning about snow, avalanche problems, terrain assessment, and more. That was followed by two field days where we practiced rescue skills and got to see firsthand many of the topics we discussed in the classroom. I really appreciated the "advanced movement" course option which enabled us to have a more engaging and fun day of skiing. I highly recommend Ben Markhart Mountain Guiding for any course or guide trips you may be looking for.

Ben and Bruce—thank you both so much! Your expertise and kindness (loaner gear saving the day) exceeded expectations. Definitely would recommend putting a flag on the sign up page asking folks to have some days in the backcountry before signing up for the course. While I appreciated you accommodating me, I def am not the target demographic for this course. It might help others to see that while all levels are welcome, a season of touring and owning your own gear would allow folks to get the desired outcomes out of a course like this. Thanks for everything!

It was an excellent experience to take the course with Ben being our instructor. The field trips in RMNP offered a great opportunity to learn and analyze the in-reality-condition beyond text book. This was a super helpful course and well worth the value. Ben is great at teaching why you're making decisions on gear, choices on the field, etc as opposed to just providing a checklist of things you should do. Look forward to more classes like these!
