Our Philosophy

It’s all about learning to tune into the mountain-snow environment–to have ‘the sense’.  Our teaching philosophy is all about a holistic approach to operating in the frozen mountains.  Avalanches are one part of the winter mountain puzzle but we want to give you more than just the basics, we want to put you on the track to understanding the snow and mountains in the intimate way necessary to not only avoid avalanches but find powder skiing every day of the winter.

Course Description

The AIARE 1 Advanced Movment is a three-day / 24-hour introduction to avalanche hazard management.

Students can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a backcountry trip, to understand basic decision making while in the field, and to learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person (if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught).

What does Advanced Movement mean?

Many people taking AIARE classes are already skilled inbound skiers and riders who have the ability and desire to access consequential avalanche terrain--but the reality is this will take several years to get there.  These programs are built around those looking to be in the game for the long haul and want to be accessing big terrain on their own in the future.  We only work with longtime ski guides are capable of providing mentorship for big mountain freeride and ski mountaineering minded students and the real talk about what it will take to get where you want to go and make a plan.

Prerequisite

  • At least one season of ski or split touring
  • Ability to ski or ride black diamond terrain and variable snow confidently
  • Ability to tour for 2500-ft vertical of elevation gain

Location

These courses are based out of Estes Park, CO and include one classroom day and two field days in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Who Should Take this Course

There is no prior education requiremnt for these courses but for advanced movement programs you must have a grasp of the basics of ski touring movement up and down.

Aspiring professionals will need to take the AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue as a prerequisite for the Pro 1 course and this would be a great program to start.

  • Develop a plan for travel in avalanche terrain.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify avalanche terrain.
  • Effectively use The AIARE Risk Management Framework to make terrain choices in a group setting.
