Our Philosophy

It’s all about learning to tune into the mountain-snow environment–to have ‘the sense’.  Our teaching philosophy is all about a holistic approach to operating in the frozen mountains.  Avalanches are one part of the winter mountain puzzle but we want to give you more than just the basics, we want to put you on the track to understanding the snow and mountains in the intimate way necessary to not only avoid avalanches but find powder skiing every day of the winter.

Course Description

The AIARE 2 is a three-day / 24-hour course in avalanche hazard management.

The level two courses begins to shift the focus from how to avoid avalanche terrain to how to interact with avalanche terrain in a thoughtful fashion.  This is a fundamental shift from a high certainty environment–avalanches don’t happen on low angle slopes–to a uncertain environment.  We are forced to enter the tricky ambiguous world of accepting and managing risk as opposed to avoiding it.  These programs are where having experienced ski guides are essential.

Location

These courses are based out of Estes Park, CO and include one classroom day and two field days in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Who Should Take this Course

Students must have completed the AIARE 1 and Rescue Course.

Aspiring professionals will need to take the AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue as a prerequisite for the Pro 1 course and this would be a great program to start.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Differentiate where specific avalanche hazards exist within the landscape and identify avalanche terrain where consequences may be more severe.
  • Use and interpret weather, snow, and avalanche observations to locate appropriate terrain prior to entering and while in the field.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills within a small team that include facilitating small group discussion, promoting appropriate terrain selection, and utilizing simple risk management strategies.
  • Implement a basic forecasting framework that can be used in conjunction with and in the absences of local supporting avalanche information.
