Trip: Intro to Jumping Clinic at Kanuga

Guide: Carolyn B., Josh W.

As a brand new mountain biker, I had some nerves jumping into...jumping. When I showed up I was greeted by Josh, Carolyn, and Maggie. They made me feel welcome and that helped to allay some of my nerves. After intros we split into groups. I self selected to be in Carolyn's group as I'm a brand new mountain biker. Carolyn was a supportive and patient instructor and gave great feedback. She was also very fun to be around! We went over body position, foot placement and wheel lifts. I really loved that she always referenced how each movement should feel in our bodies rather than just giving a list of insturctions without context. If we had ended right there I would have left a happy man. When we moved on to actual jumps she taught very progressively which helped me feel comfortable with each incremental step. At no point did I feel pressure to push past my comfort zone. While I definitely have a lot to absorb and implement, when course ended I felt more confident on my bike and more capable of handling more diverse terrain. I went and rode Evergreen afterwards. It was the best I've ever felt on my bike and I even got a little air! Intentionally! I'll definitely be back for more clinics and private lessons. I feel that seeking out qualified instruction goes a long way towards relative safety and that safety goes a long way towards fun!

Maggie, was absolutely amazing. Super watchful, giving cues to progress, as well as being reassuring in time will improve skills

Josh was really cool and taught us the basics of jumping! We got to practice on some of the jumps on the trails and received feedback. It was helpful to see videos of us in between laps.

Trip: 2hr Private Lesson - Advanced Black-Rated Trails at Ride Kanuga

Guide: Josh W.

My son (18 yr old) and I (54 yr old) took a lesson with Josh at Ride Kanuga. We've both been riding for a long time (years), but never had taken a lesson. The first 2 hours we focused on technical skills and mainly how they apply to descending. Josh provided us with some concepts that we had never considered or if we had, never put into practice. The last hour we worked on jumping starting off the basic concepts. My son accelerated quickly through the jumping learning process...he had a blast. The next day we put our new skills into practice. We rode Upper Upper Black and Avery Creek. These are trails we've ridden many times. My son of course flew down everything but said he felt way more in control and jumped things he wasn't good with doing before. I of course went much slower but felt in control…like I’ve never felt before. It was the best ride either of us had ever on those trails. Highly recommend MTB Skills Factory. Thanks Josh.
