Trip: Nyamirambo

Trip: Remera

Guide:

I was extremely underwhelmed by this. The website said 9 dishes at 5 stops, we went to 4 stops and even if you count the drinks we were at 6 dishes. In addition, we really didn't get much in the way of information from our guide about the food or the neighborhood. Both of these things combined with how expensive this was makes it something I would not do again and would not recommend. 1 beer, 1 juice, 1 milk, 2 shared dishes for $100 is crazy considering the price tag in RWF is only about 30k RWF per person looking at the menus.

Show up hungry, you are going to eat a LOT of really delicious food. Our food guide Yves met us at the designated location in Kigali after having texted us with the details. We proceeded to taste a variety of African dishes that we had never experienced before. Walking through the crowded town provided a real sense of place and experiencing a milk bar, variety of restaurants and a cold local beer at the end was enlightening. Throughout, our guide spoke of culture, food and life, past and present, in Rwanda even speaking directly of his family's experience during the genocide. I highly recommend this experience if you visit Kigali.

Trip: Nyamirambo

Guide:

I arrived at Isame Restaurant ahead if time to find my guide Denise waiting! She took me on a wonderful culinary tour of Nyamirambo, where we sampled the best food Kigali has to offer. Passing by 4 restaurants/cafes and one juice shop. I believe the experience was priceless and the company was great. Denise was very attentive to my enquiries and taught me the name of every dish and how to eat it the Rwandan way. She sent me photos of the places we visited afterwards. All in all worth every penny.

Yves was lovely and agreed to be a tour guide on late notice. I learned a lot about the food, some key words and he was very helpful. Awesome time!

Trip: Remera

Guide:

The hosts were very nice, however the food was terrible and we learned later that Remera is the red light district of Kigali. Do not recommend unless they improve their food offerings significantly.

Trip: Remera

Guide:

The Remera food tour was FABULOUS. The tour guide, Yves was a fantastic, a great conversationalist and willing to share his own personal experiences about living in Rwanda. We were lucky enough to have a "personal" tour as there were no other reservations that evening. We started at Cafe Camellia with a cup of Americano and an interesting dish of tilapia and boiled peanuts wrapped in banana leaves. It was highly interesting, neither good nor bad. We moved onto a sugarcane juice stand where Yves was able to negotiate for the freshest squeezed sugarcane juice with ginger -- I was not a fan of the juice but it was likely due to there being too much ginger added, but I can see how this juice could be light and refreshing on a hot and humid day. We moved onto the milk bar with samosas, I did not try the milk (fermented/non-fermented) but the beef samosa was fantastic, it reminded me of a cheesesteak eggroll. We moved onto Kaawa Edge where we had chicken stew and listened to some local karaoke. It was interesting to hear them singing American songs, but it felt so much like home. The chicken stew was by far one of the best dishes that we had on the food tour and in general, while in Kigali.
