Laurie Watt
About me
Laurie fell in love with hiking and skiing in the mountains as a kid but it wasn’t until she had sent her kids off to college that she was able to fully embrace mountain life. While raising her family and cultivating a career in Physical Therapy, Laurie found time to trek and climb in Alaska, Switzerland, Africa and Patagonia. Those trips stoked the fire for more time and experiences in the mountains. She expanded her skill set to rock and ice climbing as a guest of Mooney Mountain Guides. Once the kids were off, Laurie committed to the process of becoming a guide. Through training, mentorship and many days out, she has developed her skills and become an AMGA Certified Single Pitch Instructor, Apprentice Alpine Guide and Ice Instructor Course graduate.
Laurie’s passion is to provide opportunities for beginner climbers, especially all women groups, to try climbing. “I love watching women discover that they are much more capable and strong than they know through climbing”. Laurie guides beginner rock and ice climbing as well as routes on the glaciers of Mt. Baker.

Laurie was exceptional. I’ve done a little bit of indoor, outdoor and ice climbing. Laurie provided a route which allowed me to have a fun first to reorient myself and then had more challenging routes. She also created a route for those of us who wanted to repel. There were lots of options and she took the time to go through everything the newbies would need to know and was kind and calm when talking them through spots that were hard for them. All the while explaining the safety procedures and safety backup procedures to alleviate any possible concerns they may have had. She’s fantastic with a tight belay. You feel secure and safe with her watching your climb. Knowing she’ll be there if you falter. I also appreciated her suggestions for us to improve during our climbs. It allowed us to make the routes more a bit more challenging so we could continue to progress. She loves her job and it clearly shows. I had an amazing day specifically because Laurie had a well thought out plan for everyone. Thank you Laurie! Hope to climb with you again. Best, Kristen

It didn't hurt that it was a perfect day to climb, but Laurie was a great, patient, supportive instructor. She shared her experience and knowledge in a way that was most effective to her students' ability and level. She also had recommendations for other climbing areas appropriate to our skills. Would 100% learn from her again.

An amazing yet challenging adventure. Laurie is very knowledgeable. She makes you feel comfortable and explains why they do what they do as they do it. Very safety aware. Intern Tony too was knowledgeable and also explained things. Always double check safeties #1. Had a fantastic time. Would definitely recommend trying. Thanks for a great experience.

Laurie was really great about contacting us in advance to discuss what we hoped to gain from our guided experience. On the day of the climb she discussed our options for the climb with regard to weather and risk then gave us choices. The climb was both enjoyable and instructive. Laurie was very professional and I always felt safe but also at ease as I would feel with a friend. At the end of the day and afterward in an email she shared resources that we might like to pursue and welcomed us to contact her with questions in the future! I woukd love to climb with Laurie again and will definitely recommend her to any friends looking to get into ice climbing, rock climbing or mountaineering

Laurie guided us climbing Lion Head Winter Route on 2/15/2024. It was a sunny but cold and windy day. The original plan to Climbing Mt. Wash via Huntingtons/Tucks had to be changed. She looked at the peaks and explained to us the possibility of avalanches and challenges climbing Tuckerman's Ravine before changing the route. She’s very knowledgeable and professional. She made the climbing up and down safe and sound by securing the robe to the trees. I leaned a lot during the trip. It was a great and fun day. I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. Laurie is not only a supper knowledgeable Mountain guide but also a very nice person. We talked over the phone before the trip to discuss my interests and goal for the adventure. I got frostbite from a sub zero day hike a month before. She brought very warm mittens in case I needed them. I will definitely get back to her for another climbing.
