Our Philosophy

It’s all about learning to tune into the mountain-snow environment–to have ‘the sense’.  Our teaching philosophy is all about a holistic approach to operating in the frozen mountains.  Avalanches are one part of the winter mountain puzzle but we want to give you more than just the basics, we want to put you on the track to understanding the snow and mountains in the intimate way necessary to not only avoid avalanches but find powder skiing every day of the winter.

Course Description

The AIARE 1 is a three-day / 24-hour introduction to avalanche hazard management.

This online hybrid course will run with two field days in conjunction with an online learning module and virtual meeting.  The online learning module must be completed prior to the online meeting which will be scheduled the Wednesday prior to the weekend field sessions from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

Students can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a backcountry trip, to understand basic decision making while in the field, and to learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person (if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught).

Location

These courses are based out of Estes Park, CO and include two field days in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Who Should Take this Course

There is no prior education requiremnt for these courses but for advanced movement programs you must have a grasp of the basics of ski touring movement up and down.

Aspiring professionals will need to take the AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue as a prerequisite for the Pro 1 course and this would be a great program to start.

Student Learning Outcomes

At the end of the AIARE 1 course, the student should be able to:

  • Develop a plan for travel in avalanche terrain.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify avalanche terrain.
  • Effectively use The AIARE Risk Management Framework to make terrain choices in a group setting.
  • Demonstrate effective companion rescue.
