Intro to Jumping Clinic

Take flight with intentional skills

Have you been eyeing the great jumps at Brush Mountain Park and wonder: How do you even start doing that? Rather than just launching down the trail and hoping for the best, wouldn’t be awesome if you had a plan and understanding of the elemental skills needed to jump in control?

Maybe you are already hitting the jump lines but are having inconsistent outcomes. Sometimes it goes fine, but other times it feels weird and out of control.

This intro to jumping clinic is designed to teach you the skills needed to evaluate the size and shape of any jump and understand how to tweak your skill application based on your speed. “Press” and “Absorb” are the elemental skills. We’ll teach you how to do each one, when and how much to apply them. Let’s make YOU the driver in control of taking flight.

Cost: $44 per person. This clinic is sponsored and subsidized by the New River Land Trust, the Town of Blacksburg, and the New River Valley Bicycle Association to keep the cost less than a 1/3 of normal pricing. Consider signing up for a few clinics!

Who should take this clinic:

  • This clinic is appropriate for all level riders wanting to learn to jump with more intention, control, and confidence.

  • Riders who have never had their wheels off the ground will learn proper technique to get started, get PLENTY of repeatable practice on the small jump section of the Green Trail

  • Intermediate level jumpers will benefit from going back to basics, refining the essential fundamentals to jump with control.

What to expect:

  • We’ll start with an intro to listen to your previous experience and goals, then set expectations and a plan for the clinic

  • Then, we’ll move into a skills assessment and move through the essential pre-requisite skills including Body Position / Balance and creating effective “Press and Absorb” technique in an open area and on a practice jump.

  • Next, we’ll move to applying these foundation jumping skills to the practice jumps at the Gateway Skills Park. We’ll get a ton of repetition on those jumps with individual analysis and feedback from our professional coaches (including video analysis).

  • Depending on the level of the group, we may progress to some individual jumps at the lower end of StoneCutters Hollow. As always, we need to dial back the challenge of the terrain to be able to actually practice new things!
