Blue Lake Circuit

Location

Jindabyne, New South Wales

Group Size

4 people per guide

Duration

8 hours

Blue Lake sits frozen at the base of Mt Twynam for most of the winter. Getting there on skis or a splitboard, via the Illawong traverse and the iconic suspension bridge crossing, is a full day of proper backcountry.

The Blue Lake Circuit starts at Guthega and climbs through varied terrain to the summit of Mt Twynam, Australia's third highest peak. From the top, you ski into the upper Blue Lake catchment or drop the steeper NE gully down to the frozen lakeshore. Lunch on the shores of Australia's largest glacial lake. Then a smaller climb out, and a long descent back to the Snowy River.

This is a 17 km day with around 1,000 metres of elevation gain. High fitness is required. Advanced riding ability and prior backcountry experience are both recommended. This is not a tour to stretch for: it rewards those who come prepared.

Meets at Guthega or carpooling from Jindabyne. Your guide will be in touch before the day with logistics.
