While places of unparalleled beauty don't tend to stay that way when word gets out somehow the climbing in Unaweep Canyon has escaped the hordes of popularity others on the Western Slope have suffered. Maybe it's just too close to Moab or people wanted to get scared in the Black Canyon but this desert location is truly special. The name, from the Ute people, means 'the canyon with two mouths'. Because the rivers flow to both ends. The granite cliffs lining this valley have a few thousand climbs on their walls that are taller than most of the skyscrapers in major cities. While the winter can be cold there are still many climbable days since the walls face mainly south. Spring and fall are the most stellar weather with an early start making for better climbing in the summer months. This Western Slope climbing area has a good mixture of styles and makes a great location to learn to sport lead or trad lead. You can learn to crack climb or improve your multipitch climbing.
