Skip the standard crowded Kuliouou Hike. Walk about a quarter mile in then cut off onto an empty trail. You cross over the summit of Kuliouou after a different route over without the crowds on the way up. You could head back down the lovely Ironwood tree lined trail, or if you want to turn the hike from intermediate casual to very extreme you can cross over and head toward the summit of Puu O Kona and see if you can find a separate way down the mountain post summit. This hike is very extreme. Puu O Kona is one of those that is about 7 miles approximately, but feels as if it is about 12 based off of the undulating terrain, scrambling, uneven footing, and full body workout. Lots of drop off danger spots, and the way out trail at the end can end up as making a new trail down a mountainside through thick trees and foliage if you miss the right turn off spot in the pine needle secret scape. The views are amazing, and it is a great way to get away from the crowds!
