About me

GUIDE ⬩ EDUCATOR ⬩ FRIEND

“Now these mountains are our Holy Land, and we ought to saunter through them reverently.” - John Muir

Sarah’s most distinguishing skill is her ability to bring authentic connection into every interaction. This combined with strong mountain intelligence and almost two decades as an educator and guide - enables you to experience the mountains fully while feeling safe both physically and emotionally. From rivers, steep rocks and snowy peaks to focused skills training in snow pits, local crags and virtual webinars; she cares a lot about empowering people in the outdoors. In the summer you might find her at a crag, on a summit or deep in the wilderness with a giant textbook on wild plants in one hand, hunched over a tiny plant wearing a giant backpack. In the winter you may know she’s nearby by the sound of excited hoots echoing through the woods when she gets a face full of powder or finds a beautiful snow grain to dork out on. She is the first female AMGA trained splitboard guide in Colorado and actively makes it her goal to change that by elevating Women through running Women’s specific outdoor programs and workshops. She is a certified AMGA SPI, and AMGA Apprentice Mountain Guide trained in the Splitboard/Ski, Alpine and Rock disciplines. She is an AIARE Instructor, WFR, Certified Raft Guide, Yoga Teacher, a professionally trained PSIA Ski Instructor, and AASI Snowboard Instructor and is fluent in English and Spanish. There is nothing that she enjoys more than taking people into the mountains and can’t wait to help you meet your goals.

Trip: AIARE Hut Based Avy 1 Course

With Sarah M., Mia T. on February 11, 2024

Company: San Juan Expeditions

Absolutely invaluable. I was honestly worried I wouldn’t learn a lot that would be easily applicable but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Most of the time was spent outside in terrain making decisions and looking at conditions in real time. Way more skinning and skiing than I expected which was just awesome. I felt that what was communicated indoors was directly applied outdoors and there was flexibility to allow for experiencing different challenges. The guides allowed for each person to grow in the ways most valuable to them while still having agency. It was more than learning about avalanche safety—it was learning to actually navigate risks associated with avalanches in the backcountry. The rescue practice was an added skill as well. I feel that I have a much better understanding of what and where to evaluate. I would not have gained nearly as much from a course structured differently or located elsewhere.

Trip: PRIVATE | Slaydies Companion Rescue

With Sarah M. on February 04, 2023

Company: San Juan Expeditions

Sarah was an amazing guide for the companion rescue course. She had a plethora of valuable education and information to offer and supported us as we practiced skills she taught us. She welcomed questions, feedback and reflection time with our practice which gave me more confidence in what to work on as I practice these skills outside of the course.

Sarah and her teammate Chelsi were amazing. Great combination of support, affirmation, thought provoking correction, and intimate wisdom while being completely humble, thankful, and open to other people’s experiences. I felt informed and empowered the entire day. Couldn’t ask for a better learning environment. Highly recommend!
